What is a CSA?
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a commitment between farmer and consumer. It’s a means to have a direct relationship between the production and consumption of your food. It’s about supporting your farmer and committing to the success of the growing season to produce FRESH, LOCALLY GROWN PRODUCE! It’s as good as it gets, man! ☺
Why choose Backdoor Harvest? Nothing is better than freshly harvested vegetables! By having an urban farmer tend your harvest, you know where your food comes from. You get the enjoyment and nutrition of organic produce, fresh grown by experienced farmers who can get the most flavorful bounty out of each and every seed. You are also supporting your local habitat, economy, and harvest while expending minimal natural resources to do so.
Can I participate if I do not have a backyard? Yes! You can receive a box of fresh, local vegetables each week without a farm of your own. Your vegetables are grown in a backyard farm in your area. You’ll be sharing in the bounty of your neighbors!

Can I still work in my garden? Yes, just don't feel pressure to squeeze it in your schedule. Your farmers will be tending to your garden once a week to maintain, plant, harvest and address any issues. During this time you are welcome to watch, ask questions, and learn as much about the process as you wish.
How do you distribute the produce? Most of your produce will come from your farm. Your farmer may bring produce from other nearby farms to add to your basket, but you can rest assured that they will be grown with the same organic practices.
How will you water the garden? We install drip irrigation systems to effortlessly water your farm. Drip irrigation is a great way to conserve water while providing your farm with exactly the water it needs. We also supply rain barrels upon request (additional cost applies).

What is a rain barrel and how does it work? A rain barrel is usually a 55-gallon drum that collects and stores water from your rooftop. It conveniently sits under your rain gutter and usually has a spigot that you can fill your watering can or attach a hose to.

How big of a space will I need? Your farm size depends upon your needs and interests. This will be determined during your initial home evaluation with Backdoor Harvest. Typically, a 20 x 20 sq ft area will feed a family of 4. A 15 x 15 sq ft will feed a family of 2-3. Both larger and smaller farms are available- we definitely want to accommodate each individual farm's needs.
Where are your services offered? We are excited to be available in St. Louis city and the surrounding areas.

Will I choose the vegetables, fruit, and/or herbs that will be planted? Yes, your farm will be customized to your taste. We have a catalog containing a wonderful variety of plants- you choose what you want to eat, and we will grow it!
Do you use fertilizers or pesticides? No way! We have adopted a companion gardening practice- with means that other plants can control pests. Keeping a farm clean of weeds and debris will also help. We practice organic methods, so we will never use harsh, toxic chemicals to do what nature can do best. We also offer references to lawn care products and insect repellent that will keep your farm and family safe.
How often will my farmer take care of my farm, and do I have to be home? Your farmer will come to your house on a weekly basis to maintain and harvest your farm. You do not have to be home as long as the farm is accessible. We will leave your basket of freshly harvested vegetables (along with a few extra surprises) on your doorstep cleaned and ready to eat/cook. YUM ☺
